30 Hawkeyes Qualify for NCAAs

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Thirty University of Iowa student-athletes secured spots at the 2018 NCAA Track and Field West Preliminary, the NCAA Division I Track and Field and Cross Country Committee announced Thursday.

Iowa’s 30 qualifiers will compete in 36 events. The qualifiers include 13 returnees, 17 first timers, and the men’s and women’s 1,600 and 400-meter relays.

The athletes selected finished the regular season as one of the top 48 competitors in an individual event or one of the top 24 relays. The top 12 individuals and relays from the West Region will move on to the 2018 NCAA Championship final rounds in Eugene, Oregon, June 6-9.

Junior Reno Tuufuli enters the preliminary round as the highest ranked Hawkeye in the West Region on the men’s side. Tufuuli is seeded second in the discus with a mark of 199 feet, 8 inches (60.87 meters). Tuufuli is one of 13 Hawkeyes set to compete in multiple events. He will also compete in the shot put.

Coming off two Big Ten championships in the long jump and triple jump, senior Jahisha Thomas enters the regional as the No. 2 seed in the long jump with a Big Ten record of 21 feet, 6 inches, and No. 9 seed in the triple jump (43 feet, 8.5 inches). Thomas will be making her third trip to the NCAA Preliminary round.

Iowa’s 30 qualifiers are the most since 2011 when it send 33 to the West Regional.

The NCAA West Regional runs May 24-26 in Sacramento, California, on the campus of California State University, Sacramento. The meet will be live streamed by FloTrack.
