Waterloo Mother Charged with False Report

WATERLOO, Iowa (Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier) -- The mother of a girl critically injured in what was thought to be a hit-and-run crash two weeks ago has been arrested.

Waterloo police arrested Anita Nelson, 32, of 1017 Mulberry St., for filing a false report, a misdemeanor.

Authorities allege she gave false statements to police, medical staff and Iowa Department of Human Services workers trying to cover up for her boyfriend because she didn’t want him to go to jail. She is also accused of coaching her other children and witnesses what to tell police, records state.

Police and paramedics found Nelson’s daughter in the roadway in the area off East Ninth and Mulberry streets around 8:15 p.m. April 18, and Nelson said a vehicle had hit the child and drove off.
