Sumner Lions Club Rebuilding after Flood

SUMNER, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) - A group in a small Iowa town are beautifying a park damaged in a flood.

The flood happened in Sumner last July. Most of the homes in the downtown area had flooded basements. The Sumner light plant took on a lot of water as well.

The Sumner Lions Club received a $10,000 grant from the Lions Club International Foundation.

The club donates money to the foundation for disaster relief every year. When disaster struck in their backyards, they decided to apply.

The grant will go toward 19 picnic tables in Sumner City Park. Many were damaged in the flood.

"The current that was going through there washed them all the way through town and a lot of them about half, three-quarters of a mile west where this park is they ended up out in the pasture," project chairman Bob Seamans said.

They already have a plan to make sure these ones survive future floods.

"These will float so we want to make sure will get them anchor down wherever we put them," Lions Club member Dwight Wedemeier said.

They'll finish putting together the rest of the benches on Monday.

They say they are excited to see the tables in the park, a symbol of hard work and love for the town that tends to flood every now and then.
