One Killed in Hwy 30 Crash

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- A 62-year-old Vinton man has died from injuries suffered in a two-vehicle crash on U.S. 30 Wednesday morning.

The Linn County Sheriff's Office said it happened about 7:45 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of U.S. 30 at 80th Street.

Deputies said a Pontiac Vibe that John Gibbs was driving entered the median, striking several crash guard sand barrels, then reentered the roadway.

That's when a Ford Edge 67-year-old Bruce Gardner of Garrison was driving hit Gibbs' vehicle. Garner's vehicle came to rest on the travel portion of U.S. 30, while Gibbs' vehicle came to rest on its top south of the highway.

First responders got Gibbs out of his vehicle and took him to a hospital where was pronounced dead.

Crews also took Garner to a hospital with what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries. Both men were wearing seatbelts. No one else was in the vehicles.
